"ONE GOLDEN LETTERING": Lesson One

PANNING FOR GOLD!
Go on a studio treasure hunt and gather your "gold".  ALL your gold art supplies that is!  In this workshop, we'll be lettering, painting and doodle decorating with a GOLD color palette.  Go through your art supply stash and gather all your gold, pens, paints, markers, papers, mediums, etc.  Keep them easily accessible to complete the fun projects in this class.  I had so much on my own personal treasure hunt in my studio discovering so many GOLDEN opportunities in the "land of the misfit art supplies"!

LESSON ONE: "WHIMSEY WORDS AND PRETTY PAPERS"
In addition to your markers and gold paints, you'll need some papers.  I'll be using brown packaging/craft paper, tissue paper, scrapbook paper, plain and striped wrapping paper.    Make your own gift wrap, cards, decorations with your personally printed papers with your own beautiful handwriting using these techniques.

Make magic with your own handwriting to create decorative wrapping with plain wrapping paper and packing papers with a gold paint pen.  Let loose, don't over think it, just start to letter holiday words, songs and wishes filling up entire sheets of paper.   Stretch your creative muscles and move with your writing making a signature one of a kind design. This is the perfect holiday "de-stress" project. Swoop, swish, and over exaggerate your swirls.  Tres chic!

AT A LOSS AT WHAT TO WRITE?  HERE ARE 50 HOLIDAY WORDS:
#1-10. merry, bright, shine, sparkle, jingle, Christmas, holiday, twinkle, family, gift
#11-25- celebrate, cheer, blessings, faith, love, hope, star, holy, joy, glee, silent night, happy, sleigh bells,
#26-36- angel, peace, grace, shining star, child, rejoice, child, calm, manger, baby, rejoice
#37-50- santa, snow, carols, mistletoe, holly, lights, tree, ornaments, reindeer, tinsel, bells, garland, gingerbread, bows...
....or letter and write all the words to your favorite Christmas carols!

...a simple gold paint pen and plain colored wrapping paper...

Use lined wrapping paper for a "height guide" if you're a stay in the lines kind of person...

...write continuously and let your words spill onto the next line becoming the art element...

The possibilites are endless, because you will never run out of the most important tool for this project...your own unique and fabulous handwriting.

"TWO GOLDEN LETTERINGS": Lesson Two

part one: "A GOLDEN SAMPLER"
included in many of my classes is to create a A valuable reference tool called "supplies sampler".  This is a valuable personal resource to keep track of your inventory as well as discovering the qualities of specific products such as paints, pens, markers, inks, etc.  Many products perform differently in "action", than they appear on the bottles, caps or containers.  Use a journal like mine in the video, or cut up cardstock "chips" and display on a small binding ring.  Aren't you surprised at how many variations and shades of gold you have in your stash?

part two: "PAINTED WORDS and DAZZLED WRAPS"

Break out the gold paints to create amazing paper masterpieces peppered with good cheer and your fabulous lettering.  If you're in a painting mood, gather up some plain wrapping paper or plain paper gift bags, spread out and start slinging the bling!
1. " BIG GOLD STRIPES"- Stretch!  Horizontal for lettering words and phases.
2. "CONFETTI SWIPES"- Swish and swipe!  Flat brush with gold paint.
3. "PAINTED LETTERS"-  Your fabulous print and script!  All over background, paint pen grid with round or flat brushes.
4. "GOLD FILLING"-Make it art!  Black lettering with gold in the negative spaces.

When creating decorative  patterns with hand lettering, ALTER the variety of letters and fonts with upper and lower case, cursive script, printing and doodling.  Mix and match various styles to create interest.

What a nice supply of painted wrapping paper and glamourous gift bags to refresh your wrapping center.  Isn't this a great holiday stress buster, combing creative activity with "practical" end products?  Who said we can't justify our art time and multi task?!!

"THREE GOLDEN LETTERINGS": Lesson Three

"GOLDEN GREETINGS"

It's so gratifying to create art with the sole purpose of giving it away. There is nothing as special as a handmade card and the holidays are the perfect time to share what we love with those we love.  Let's make some simply elegant holiday cards with a handmade paper stencil.  Add fancy lettering and custom messages with your "magic gold pens", you know, the ones that make your lettering magical!

HAND CUT WORD STENCILS:
With minimal supplies, create multiple art images for your holiday cards without a photocopier or printer.  Make your own stencil with a studio staple, the #8 manila tag, (size 6 1/4 x 3 1/8) and a craft knife..

As shown in the video:
1) Gather your card making papers (card stock or card kits with envelopes), chisel tip marker, gold paint, a "scruffy" paintbrush, gold paint and gold paint pens.
2) Cut colored cardstock or scrapbook paper to the size of your card fronts.
3) Make a word stencil on the manilla tag.  Write your chunky word with the fat chisel tip of the marker, then outline with a fine tip to create a new letter form from your handwriting.  *you can also make a stencil of shapes to add patterns to your card designs.
4) Cut word out with a craft knife on a  protected surface. I used cardboard.
5) Stencil with gold paint with a scruffy brush, pouncing vertically with a dry brush technique (minimal paint) and quick dry with a heat tool if desired.
6) With your magic gold pens, add additional hand lettered words, sentiments and linear borders to the stenciled print.
7) Write holiday messages, sentiments or personalized notes on the inside of your cards.

"FOUR GOLDEN LETTERINGS"

"GOLDEN PEN MAGIC"
Once you are comfortable and confident with your artful lettering style, you'll find many occasions  to make art with words.  You'll be finding all kinds of things to decorate with your signature style of hand lettering.  From handmade cards to personalized napkin rings, you have the tools to make holiday magic with a festive flair.

"THE ART OF SIMPLICITY"
Make "napkin LETTErings" with heavy cardstock and the "magic gold pen".  Don't you feel empowered with the perfect lettering tools?  Add a touch of gold to your gatherings with these paper gems.  So simple, but sophisticated and so impressive showing family and guests your great care and attention to detail.  Grab some colorful cardstock form your stash and let the personalizing begin.  Make them short and sweet or let your creativity go wild with embellishing ideas.

"WHIMSICAL WORDS AND CREATIVE CARDS"
Handmade holiday cards rock!  With the new confidence in your lettering, the card making possibilities are limitless making magic simply, with paper and pen!  Your lettering is art.

Try adding a one of a kind embellishment that you create with dimensional paint by Tulip brand, Ranger Liquid pearls or whatever you can find in your craft stores.  The fine tip on these bottles make it easy to "write" with paint straight from the bottle.  Choose your favorite holiday sentiments and messages and write in repeat to fill the surfaces.    Don't over think it, be yourself, loosen up, stretch and letter your heart out!

...alter your letter forms combining  print and cursive for an interesting pattern...
...use hand written words as background...
...make words in different shapes and sizes...
...letter snippets from a favorite song or hymn...

...create a sparkly dimensional embellishment
with Twinkling H20s and  glimmer sprays...
...you are your lettering and
your lettering is art,
so let it shine!

"FIVE GOLDEN LETTERINGS"

"LETTERING A BLESSING RING"

I like the "ring" theme in this class, and here is a "letter-ring" project for the final lesson of this class.  Use all the techniques presented in the previous lessons to create a truly custom, one of a kind handmade gift.  A blessing ring is a collection of handmade cards or tags with messages, quotes, promises, scripture or words given to inspire, encourage or gift a recipient.

With your beautiful and fabulous lettering skills you have the power to create this memento for gift giving.  You really do!
1) Gather all your supplies: gold paint, pens, ribbons, binding ring, and several #8 manilla tags.  If you don't have tags, plain card stock cut to any size with a hole punched will work just fine.
2) Decorate and embellish each "page" front with a large word that signifies your intention or wish to the recipient.
3) On the back of the word tag, letter a quote, phrase or scripture that is relevant to the word.  Add journaling around the words to elaborate on the sentiment or message.
4)  String the cards on your binding ring and embellish the ring with ribbon, fabric strips, tulle, etc.  You can paint your ribbon with sparkle Modpodge to add some extra bling! ( i would love to paint my whole house with sparkle Modpodge!)  You can also paint colorful fabric strips with Silks acrylic glaze to add shimmer and shine.
5) What a memorable lettered treasure you can create for someone dear.  Have a wondeful time!

...Make a blessing ring with lettered tags or cards...
...bling up some ribbon and fabric strips to add texture to your book...

... paint special or meaningful words on the tag fronts...

...add your quotes or phrases to the back of the tag
and journal a personalized message to the recipient.
